I think this is a marvellous site and growing record to have found.I did not know Great Ayton had a Quaker school beforehand. It was the article / extract about Great Ayton in 1911 that drew me to your site (see my psoting ) but the photos you have are wonderful. If only other old boy/girl associations have such a well organised and enthusiatic team caring for their precious archives.Excellent work !

Hello,
Could you tell me where Ayton school records from the 19th century are kept, please?
Both my great-grandfather and his brother attended Great Ayton in the 1860s, and I would like to know more about their time there, if it is available.
Many thanks

I recently discovered (when searching the internet for information regarding Constantine Technical College (circa 1954/55) an AOSO 2007 Annual Report article written by David Stephenson (1950-54). I knew David and his now wife Celia during the late 50's early 60's. I left the UK for Canada in 1963 and would love to get in touch them again. It will be most appreciated if you would either advise David's e-mail address or pass this message on to him c/w my e-mail address. Thank you.

Hi,
My name is Zoe Clark, and i am the great grandaughter of James Clark and Wilhelmina Fulton Hobson. I have found info that James Clark was a pupil and perhaps a teacher's apprentice at the school between 1890-1897 and later a teacher from 1929-1930 onwards. I have also been told by Sidcot and Newtown Quaker schools that Wilhelmina Fulton Hobson was headmistress at Great Ayton for a while, but i have yet to find information to back this up. Now that Ayton school is no more, where would i be able to look for information on both James and Wilhelmina's times there?
Any help is much appreciated.
Best Wishes
Zoe Clark

Some interesting points of view actually.

I thought the bullying was a real problem at the school, another problem was the teachers inability/reluctance to deal with it even though being fully aware of it.

One of the most respected and well liked teachers in the schools history witnessed an assault ( sorry an 'alleged'assault ) once being committed and did nothing.

Pathetic.

It is a tragedy that a historic institution of education in such an ideal setting should have allowed itself to be infested with such pondlife.

Happy New Year BTW !

If you want to see what the school grounds look like now, go to satellite view on google maps and look for school lane, great ayton. Some buildings look pretty much the same. the art crafts building looks very nice. richardson hall looks tremendous without the ivy. the tree in the court yard is still there. the changes though dramatic in content, are for the best part, very tasteful.

Those old scholars who may remember him will be saddened to learn that Richard Wilkinson (at school 1964-1970) passed away at the end of November 2010. His funeral was held on 7th Dec and attended by some old school friends. We will miss him.

I've taken over the website after Dick Dennis passed on. I'm working my way through fixing pages that were seemingly broken in 2006 - perhaps when the site moved to it's www.aytonoldscholars.org address.

Please start using this, once popular, area of the site again.

Interesting to read about ruthless bullying,,, Some did go on but no more than in any other enviroment. I joined friends from another school where the bullying was on a different level entirely. The thing is we all remember things differently and i dont think that the bullying at friends was any worse than at other schools,,,All i remember now are the good times and the people who were friends back then.
Andy Tucker <buildingqs@hotmail.com>

From the stories I heard I think the ruthless bullying stopped before I arrived in 1974. Having said that I was talking to a neighbour who was a teacher at boarding schools and some of the stories she told makes me think it was probably the times rather than the school. Then I think a bit of rough and tumble was viewed as character building. Today schools are more enlightened, even if it is only to the possibility of litigation by victims.

Huw. I am probably making a pigs breakfast of this, but If I am right we barely overlapped and that's why you don't remember me so well. I remember that you became friends with Andrew (was it) from Malawi, whose nose I broke on the squash court at Billingham forum. Or was it your nose I broke? I don't think so. I married a Mexican Catholic and my three kids go to Catholic schools in London where the discipline is quite fierce and they don't have much bullying there at all. A sad contradiction. I think the problem for the school might have been that they wanted to deal with trouble like the quakers and pacifists they were. Nice to hear your voice again after 30 years!!

Sorry Phil I don’t really remember you that well but do remember the name and have an image which I can’t be sure is you r not! I am however reassured as your description below clearly indicates that you don’t remember much of me - I was never good with my fists! Were you in Tanzania? (I think we used to exchange words on the TanZam vs ZamTan railway! Anyhow I wanted to comment on what a top posting this is – most insightful and funny too. As you say shame that they didn’t have the bottle to address the ruthless bullying that went on.

OK. I've now had a look through the site. Some names I remember. Others are familiar, but I can't place them. Isn't it an odd feeling? Orienteering on the moor, listening to Jimi Handrix and Pink Floyd at Easter at a teacher's house over Easter and playing risk. A terrible group of repulsive Bahrain faux skinheads I was unfortunate enough to share a class and dorm with. Tea and tea and tea. Flying home to Africa at Christmas and in Summer. Bright summer nights in the dorm. Breathy silence in the Meeting House with the same rotund and orotund teacher, I think he was the maths teacher, getting up and rabbiting on. Billingham forum. Never seeing Whitby. The creaking pine of Rosebury theatre. Mr Whittle, well meaning and intentioned, but driven up the wall by a very fey bunch. The religion teacher (Was it Peter Rushforth?) taking us round the churches and teaching us trust exercises. Leeds Playhouse. Compulsive writer Chris McNab and Martin (??) Pickersgill. I always thought McNab would be a writer. Some guy called Andrew something from Malawi. Custard slices from Fothergill's (Was it?). A visit to the Northern Echo. Listen to news of London bombings and H block on the radio. Feeling stupidly superior to the day students and ignoring them. French lessons. Being kept in. Was Huw a very short spunky blond little guy who came in the third form? Good with his fists and quite upstanding as I remember.
The tuck shop. The Old Scholars with the headmaster. Floating above all the drama and nastiness. Hmmm. Accidentally coming across people copping a feel near the bridge at the Beck. The smell of cigarette smoke in the toilets and gobbing and ragging. Why did the school close in the end? Did it deserve to? Looking back I think the teacher's were to blame for not stopping the bullying. It could have been a really good school. Shame!

I am currently researching a painting that is for auction and I am looking to acquire. Painted by Dorothy Lawrenson, a portrait of two children, exhibited in 1942. I noticed there is another one of "Harry Banks" listed on this site and Dorothy was a teacher during the 30's and 40's at the school. I wondered whether the subjects of the painting could be identified or anyone know's more about Dorothy Lawrenson. It can be seen on the following link,

Lot number 93

Hi! Thought i would add my comments. Not everyone's days at school, are happy ones! I enjoyed reading the magazines. I have not been to Great Ayton since my family and i left. However, my days at the school (1988-1990)were horrible!I only really enjoyed tennis, hockey, art and history lessons. Hated maths classes....! Some names i recognised, i was happy to 'hear' their news, some...i was not! However, i can see they have all grown up, and some are even living 'down south'! But Since leaving school, i returned to Southampton, I've also lived in Stavanger, Oslo and Brussels. I now live with my boyfriend in the north east! I send this with peace.

Just a reminder to all old scholars. REUNION IS ON JUNE 25TH & 26TH THIS YEAR. The years move on and the number of Old scholars becomes less. If we want it to survive it's up to us all. Please make every effort to come. Friendship is a wonderful thing. Something we all experienced while we were at Ayton.Reunion food - GREAT. Wonderful B-b-q, excellent lunch on Sunday with as much as you can eat.Organisation stupendous. Give it a try. You won't regret it.

I went on to Study Electronics at Manchester Polytechnic. I worked for Bae and Marconi for several years, sabotaging Eurofighter, honestly it wasn’t me! I now work as an IT analyst for local goverment in Fife, Scotland.

Married a Scottish lass Christmas 2002, I got married in a Kilt!

I was at the school from 1979 to 1981. I have some fond memories. Mainly of fell walking, being by the beck, film nights, listening to the radio at breakfast (still do that!), where were who when you heard that John Lennon had been shot!? I loved listening to SKA music with one of the day scholars (forgot his name).

At least I survived the bullying! Bog washes (such a treat), dead legs, being crushed into the side of a bench during 'meeting', most excellent, NOT! At least it made me stronger. Developed my back-bone. Shame that that aspect of school life was so bad, mainly due to not being believed. No thanks to the teachers who didn't have the bottle to do anything about it! Thank's to the teachers who made school life so much better.

My biggest mistake was running away from school after being hit in the ear, I was wearing my slippers, it was snowing! I always was impulsive. I also remember being led by another into doing something that still shames me. I was trying to go along with the crowd. All I can say is that it involved a bottle on lemonade: ruined a couple of friendships!

My biggest success, standing up too one bully who ended up with a black eye and bruised pride. Sorry James! but it had to be done.

Managed to come through with my Christian faith, not only intact, but really strong.

Now live in Edinburgh's New Town with my lovely wife, Victoria. She is about to go to study to become a Church of Scotland minister.

During holidays she lived with her grandparents in Billingham (now Cleveland), because her parents worked in Arabia. Carol had a younger sister called Alison who was at Ayton, too. For her studies Carol went to Cambridge and, later, to San Sebastian in Spain.
I would be very grateful, if anyone could give me any information, address or e-mail address that might help me to come into contact with Carol.
