This year has seen the beginning of a new phase in the history of the Old Scholars' Association. The reunion in July 1997 was memorable in many ways, the awful weather, the number of old scholars who do not often attend the reunions coming to see the school, as a school for the last time and the bitter-sweet atmosphere that I felt over the whole weekend. I am sure many will remember the singing of the school song at the end of last year's AGM.

Since our last meeting many things have happened, the finalisation of the sale of the school to Wimpey and the three day sale of the school property which was attended by many old scholars nearly all looking for a small memento. I know Alan Goodfellow was very pleased to be the successful bidder for Spig’s bell, Thanks to Dick and others, the new Handbook has been published containing the amendments to our constitution, and I am sure you will all have read the magazine and felt that Gill and her team have produced a winning number.

All the archives are now housed safely in the passage room and will remain there until the school committee and the Association can make more permanent plans.

The executive committee has discussed arrangements for next years reunion, remembering that by next June the building work will be in progress and have tentatively arranged, I think, some exciting plans, more on that later. With new leavers and staff members the Association numbers now stand at 932. There are still 23 members, of whom 18 are life members, who have disappeared and Dick would welcome any help with finding these old scholars.

Finally can I make my personal tribute to Wendy who is stepping down from the Chairmanship. She has guided me through the first few years of my office, which I came to as a very, very raw recruit, and her attention to detail and correspondence to all the Associations matters has made for many very easy meetings through what has for us all been a very difficult time. Wendy, from us all a very big thank you indeed.
