After sixteen years of editing the Annual Report, I have decided it is time to retire and hand over to a younger old scholar - James Slater. In order to give OS a starter for ten on their new editor, James has very kindly written this profile of himself for the Mag. I hope that you will help and support him in his new role as you have supported me so wonderfully over the years: with thanks and best wishes.

Gill Jackson

Gill Jackson and Jim Slater in the Memorabelia Room at the 2004 ReunionJames came to Ayton in the autumn of 1974. Whilst he was at the school, John Reader retired and was succeeded by Fred Sessa, and the San was sold off and demolished, to be replaced by the Sick Bay in Richardson Hall. Although the Tin Gym was still in use at the end of James’s time at the school, he, along with his fellow sixth formers, helped to decide the site of its replacement.

After leaving Ayton James attended college in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and then became a theatre technician. In 1989 he moved to London to become a civil servant. He married in 1992 and had a son, Henry, in 1996: he now lives in Alnwick. With starting a new family James lost contact with the Old Scholars’ Association, until 2001 when he found the AOSA website. Through the site he made contact with former classmates Huw Jarvis, Mark Rollison, and Richard Wilkinson. As a group they have managed to contact many more former scholars from the 70s and they meet up each year at the AOSA reunion weekend.
