Three old scholars who attended the summer reunion in 2002 are descendants
of the Dixons, Ayton’s first and second Superintendents. Bevan Pumphrey (1921-26), at 91, one of our oldest Old Scholars, is the son of Mary Edith Dixon (1879-80) - daughter of Ralph Dixon (pupil 1841-45 & Head 1866-55), granddaughter of George (Head 1841-65). Bevan was in Ayton in June to present to the village a bench, now on High Green, commemorating his family’s connections with Ayton going back over 160 years. Also in Ayton for the reunion was the Lewis Family Gay (1947-49), Jo (1948-49), Jenn, Jill and Tim to support their second cousin Dick Dennis in his Presidency; they are the grandchildren of Muriel and Herbert Dennis (1903-05 & 1913-40). Through Muriel, the daughter of George Dixon’s youngest child – another George (1873-76), they are George senior’s great, great grandchildren. This makes Gay, Jo, Jenn, Jill and Tim remote cousins of Bevan. Sadly, although both Bevan and the Lewis Family were in the Meeting House on the reunion Sunday, I failed to recognise the connection and did not introduce each to the other. (See the photo below featuring the Lewis family with their cousin Dick Dennis) Our President for 2002-03 Dick Dennis (1944-52), and his sister Mary (1950-55) are second cousins of the Lewises through their great uncle, Herbert Dennis, who was uncle to their father ‘wobbly’ Dick (1918-23).
