One of the saddest things I have to report this year, was the death, last May, of CLIFFORD MORGAN (1945-81). Dick Dennis created a Book of Condolences on our website which was visited by Old Scholars from many different decades; each had their own story to tell of the impact on their lives of this remarkable man. Excerpts from the Book of Condolences may be found on Page 21 of the printed Annual Report - follow this link for the online version). In a letter to his District Secretary, Robin Grey, FRED SESSA (1975-84) sent news of himself and ERICA … “ I retired in July 2000, after ten very happy years teaching English and doing UCAS counselling at Aylesbury Grammar School. It was a far cry from Ayton, but, in part, exciting because it was so different: a high powered old fashioned grammar school, with the emphasis on academic results and entry into Oxbridge and other high powered universities. It had its downside, but I must say that I enjoyed teaching English at 6th form level. The school was a happy place and the staffroom was a friendly and united part of the school. Since retirement I have been able to do a lot of things I had hoped to do: play golf two or three times a week, work at my vegetable patch, go on holiday during term time and generally enjoy life with Erica. Erica has a magnificent garden which she works in daily, and she also attends water colour lessons in Oxford, which means she spends a lot of time painting. We live near three of our children and see them often.” (See 80s ‘news’ for details of Ben and Hepzibah.)…. “I am a governor of Sibford School, the Quaker School near Banbury and this takes a good deal of my time. It is uncanny how the problems we face at Sibford are like many of those I knew at Ayton. The school is thriving and I am enjoying being part of the Quaker scene again. I was so sorry to learn of the death of Clifford Morgan, I found him a great support at Ayton and a wonderful schoolmaster.” ALICE MEAGER (1994-97) opened the superb new ‘Ayton’ room at Sidcot School, last October. Built with funds made available after the closure of Ayton, this wonderful new facility was named in our honour. Pictures of the room and of Alice at the opening ceremony may be seen on our website. |
