Recent Past President Dorothy Dawson (Easton 1947-53), sent a photo of herself, broom in hand, taken in about 1949 in the sunken garden, which reminded her of the ‘offices’ all the girls had to do in the late forties.

Dorothy Dawson (Easton 1947-53) photographed in the Sunken Garden around about 1949. Note she is carrying a brush which prompted the anecdote above.Top and Bottom Bedrooms and the Girls’ Schoolroom had to be swept out every day before morning assembly. The washrooms had to be cleaned, the brass taps polished and the playroom and toilets etc. were all cleaned twice a day! Senior girls had to do the washing up each day after tea before they could get on with prep, this they were excused if they were on ‘prep’ duty.

The boys seemed to be excused most of these duties , but the boys of the third form were responsible for the care of the Meeting House, moving benches, putting out hymn books etc., Dorothy remembers that our contemporary the late John Ideson was ‘foreman’ at one time.

The table offices continued for several years, even after the maids started to undertake general cleaning – if Dorothy means the job of ‘trolley’ girl - a particularly mucky task which was undertaken by the fifth form girls and which meant pushing huge metal trolleys around the dining room, taking away all the dirty plates and bringing in the clean ones and the puddings etc. – it was still going strong when I left in 1955. – Ed. Suzi Scaife tells me that it all continued to the end, even the trolley people! G.J.
