Under the heading Honours a newspaper article of 18th June 1999 gave details of the award of an MBE to JOHN READER (1938-44 & 1952-74): “Mr. John Reader, who was in charge at the former Friends' School, in the village, from 1952-74, was awarded the MBE for his work as chairman of the Captain Cook's Schoolroom Museum. It came as an unexpected honour for Mr. Reader, who said: "I was astonished. It caught me quite by surprise." Mr. Reader, who became involved in the project in 1964, left the museum in a healthy position when he stepped down as chairman in March. A £200,000 national lottery grant awarded last year to redevelop the museum has ensured a bright future. Mr. Reader said: 'The visitor can now get a good idea of the education Cook received in a school for poor children.' When the museum was officially opened by Conservative Party Leader, William Hague last month, the day was dedicated to Mr. Reader.” John had a hip replacement operation in the autumn, which has made a considerable difference to his comfort and mobility. MARY READER (HODGE 1941-44) celebrates her 80th birthday on 24th January, 2000. I would like to wish her, on behalf of the Association, a very happy birthday. I hope to have details of any celebrations to include next year.

MARJORIE NUTTALL (WRIGHT 1935-44), who died late in 1999, was our President from 1975-76. Marjorie came to Ayton to teach music and to help out Auntie LOU ROBINSON (1919-44) in the office. She left Ayton in 1944 for another teaching post in war ravaged Coventry, quite a culture shock after the peace and tranquillity of Ayton. She remained in Coventry for the rest of her life. Until recently, Marjorie was a regular attender at reunions.

Dorothy Dawson sent me news of MARGARET ARANDLE, who taught Domestic Science at the school from 1961-1966: “Margaret emigrated to Perth in Western Australia in 1980. She returned to the UK in 1996 and again in 1999, staying with me for several weeks. She met JUNE PEACOCK (TENNETT 1960-66), whom she taught at Ayton, in Perth at a lace-making gathering. One of June's brothers also lives in Perth.”

VIVIEN FLYNN (1959-65) wrote to Wendy Smith with a correction for details which appeared in the staff news section of the 1999 Annual Report. PETER (1971-81) & BIDDY HOLMAN (1974-77) are not the parents of the playwright, Robert! His parents are Winifred and Philip Holman. For further details please see News 1950s.

EDWARD PARRISH (1981-86) sends a special hello to PETER RUSHFORTH (1971-95) who, he says, was one of those teachers who changed his outlook on life, literature and language and encouraged him to write poetry!

MARGARET RICHARDSON (1982-83), who taught Maths and has a wonderful soprano voice, writes to SUZI SCAIFE that she and her family have moved from Dumfries to Belgium. Her husband Julian has been made European Logistics Manager for Du Pont, they have three children Christopher, Abigail and Emily. News came from Dorothy Dawson about ALICE MEAGER (1994-97): “I work as an education recruitment consultant in central Birmingham. I travel in by train which is restful and guarantees reading time each day. We spend weekends in the garden and also work as National Trust room stewards at Croft Castle near Leominster. In my spare time, I raise funds for a project for young offenders.” This was written to Dorothy before Alice and John made the decision to attend the reunion in Bainbridge; it was good to see them both again.
