EVELYN NICHOLSON

We wished Evelyn Nicholson farewell last term after a long and happy career at Ayton. As this is being written she is enjoying a long holiday in Italy, in a sun warmer than our autumn can afford. While we begin new chapters in our lives, we at School in a new year, Evelyn Nicholson as a much loved member of the wider community in which School, Meeting and Village meet, it might be interesting for us all to look back briefly to 1931. John Wallace writes of that time:

I believe it was in the Autumn term of 1931 that Evelyn Nicholson joined the staff.

For some time Evelyn and I worked together as form master and mistress of a somewhat backward form. At this time form councils were instituted; these bodies were made up of boys and girls elected by their class-mates along with form staff. Their functions were to promote good pupil/teacher relationships.

Our form met in "Artut,” an old army but on the girls' playground. All went well until it was discovered that during the elections one of those elected had bribed his supporters with pork pies. Evelyn and I forthwith suspended the form council and assumed a more dictatorial regime.

About this time Herbert and Muriel Dennis rented from Beatrix Potter the beautiful old cottage near Tarn Hows known as Rose Castle. Muriel's very generous hospitality led her to arrange staff weekends at the cottage. We used to set off on Saturday morning and had to be back in Ayton teaching at 9 o'clock on the Monday morning.

Line drawing of a car - probably Evelyn Nicholson's as mentioned in the text.
