The Life
of the School |
| |
“Education must never lose sight of its
two-fold task - to enable us to maintain a greater mastery of
the means of life, and at the same time a deeper understanding
of the human values that give life its real worth. Religion must
have the largest place of all.”
J. H Badley. |
| Aims |
The
Trust Deed which accompanied the founding of Ayton School states
that to all the boys and girls shall be given "a guarded and
religious education." This basis for our School life is still
sought after, and in developing the personality of the child it
is desired to enable each one to find expression for the deeper
things of life, and to supply a motive which is spiritual. |
| Religious
Instruction. |
The
Meetings of the Society of Friends are attended on Sundays, a
course of Bible Study is taken throughout the School and the
children commit to memory selected passages of Scripture and other
literature. On Thursday mornings, in the midst of the day’s busy
routine, the whole community assembles for a short School Meeting.
These weekly gatherings, with their Hymn Singing, Bible Reading
by the older children, and short addressee, form a helpful factor
in the life of the School. Every morning after breakfast, the whole
School assembles for Reading. |
| House System |
The School is divided
into four Houses, which are named Backhouse, Richardson, Pease,
and Harding. There are about 25 boys and 16 girls in each House.
All through the year the Houses compete with one another for the
possession of the House Championship Shield. Most of the School
activities are included in the scheme, and it is possible for even
the youngest member of the House to contribute something. In this
way loyalty to a group is emphasized, and all unite in the desire
to bring credit to the House to which ‘they belong rather than
to the individual. |
