Girls' Dormitory

"Girls' Dormitory"

Amalgamation with Rawdon School. During the year 1921, arrangements were made, on the closing of one of our smaller Friends’ Schools, situated ’at Rawdon near Leeds, to accommodate 35 more children who were transferred from Rawdon to Ayton at the beginning of the Autumn Term. This involved extensive building operations, and many improvements have been made in our accommodation, at a cost of more than £10,000. The Headmaster of Rawdon School (A. L. Stapleton, M.A. - a former member of the Ayton Staff) rejoined as the Housemaster of Rawdon House, and made a most welcome addition to the Staff.

Management and Staff

The School was inspected by the Board of Education in 1919, and as a result Ayton has been placed on the Board’s list of Schools recognised as "efficient Secondary Schools.” Our recognition has been the means of securing the benefits of the Teachers’ Superannuation Act for members of the Staff. The control of the School is in the hands of a Committee consisting of members of the Society of Friends residing in Durham and Yorkshire, and three representatives appointed by the Board of Education. All applications for admittance receive careful consideration, and satisfactory references (if possible from Friends) are required.

The Teaching Staff is a large one 17 are in residence and the Committee makes every effort to appoint those who not only have high academic qualifications, but whose influence will help in the right formation of character and the true development of personality.
